Overview

In the Department of Neurosurgery, we value the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our faculty, staff and learners. Each member of our team brings a unique perspective which allows them to enrich not only our department and the greater health system, but our community as a whole. We strive to cultivate a culture of belonging, in which all members feel valued, which enhances our ability to thrive as individuals and as a team. We have active efforts in recruitment, advancement and retention towards these values.

As we train the next generation of neurosurgeons, we work to prepare them to provide inclusive, equitable and patient-centered care to a diverse population of patients and families; to inspire research and innovation that consistently strives to improve care and reduce disparities; and to continue to lead efforts to strengthen and improve our impact in the world.

We are committed to providing excellent clinical care, which cannot exist without recognition of the historical and cultural context that shape our interactions with patients and their families. Members of our department are engaged in ongoing training and education to provide the highest level of culturally competent, equitable and inclusive care to all of our patients.

Strategic Departmental Goals

At VCU's Department of Neurosurgery, diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values that shape our culture and drive our mission. Our DEI Strategic Plan outlines a comprehensive approach to achieving three primary goals:

  • Recruitment, Retention, and Promotion: We are committed to attracting, retaining, and advancing a diverse and talented team of staff, faculty, and trainees to enrich our department and the broader community we serve.

  • Education and Community Engagement: We strive to foster an inclusive educational environment that equips our team to deliver equitable care and better serve the diverse needs of our community.

  • Cultivating a Culture of Belonging: We aim to create a supportive and welcoming atmosphere where every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute fully.

Together, we are dedicated to building a department that reflects and respects the diversity of our community, promotes equity in all our endeavors, and ensures a sense of belonging for everyone.
