Our History
The Department of Neurosurgery continues to build upon its legacy as a leader in neurotrauma and neurocritical care.
Under the leadership of Donald Becker, M.D., who became chief of neurosurgery half a century ago, VCU became a hub for neurotrauma research funded by the NIH. Contributions and discoveries by VCU faculty that still shape the way neurosurgeons treat and manage patients worldwide include the following:
- Creation of multidisciplinary neurosurgery ICUs
- Understanding the significant impacts of secondary insults to the injured brain
- Development of intracranial pressure monitoring techniques and data interpretation
- Clarification of the role of CT scanning in neurotrauma
Education
Trainees in VCU’s neurosurgical residency program can expect to learn from a diverse caseload of adult and pediatric neurotrauma patients. Residents work alongside dedicated faculty and gain more responsibility and autonomy each year.
